Frequently Asked Questions
Must I stay in France for the full 17 days?
It is mandatory for your 6 month insurance cover by the hospital. Unless the surgeon signs you off earlier.
Is it ok to fly home 15 days after surgery?
Yes, once your surgeon signs you off you are ok to travel but when you return home you must complete the course of anti-coagulant injections. You will be provided the injections, and the nurses will show you how to do this.
Do I need to be signed off by the surgeon before returning home?
Yes, you will have a new X ray and a thorough discharge consultation as part of your sign off by the surgeon.
How soon will I be able to walk without a crutch or a stick and when can I drive/cycle/exercise?
Each patient’s recovery is different, but you should have reasonable independent mobility when you are discharged from the hospital. During your discharge consultation you will be provided with the relevant guidance.
Allow a minimum of 6 weeks before you drive. Gentle exercise should be part of your recovery programme with increasing intensity as you recover and are pain free. It is important to carry on with the exercises you have been doing during your physiotherapy. Follow the advice from Dr Stewart and feel free to ask questions during your follow up consultations.
I don’t speak French, will I be able to communicate with everyone there?
The surgeons speak English and you will have a dedicated English speaking person to greet you on arrival and support you during your stay. Most staff speak some English and patients find Google translate on your phone to be very helpful (but it can lead to some very humorous conversations!).
Can my travel companion stay with me at the hospital?
Yes, we can arrange for a second bed in your private room.
Do I need elective surgery travel insurance?
We recommend taking out elective surgery travel insurance to cover any issues not directly related to your surgery. Should you need it, we can provide contact details of our partner insurance company who will provide a quote but they have an upper age limit of 75.
Do I need a visa?
The EU EES (Entry/Exit System) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) are being introduced. You should check progress with this when organising your travel arrangements.
